Garden Trends and Ideas for 2024

Garden trends and ideas for 2024

Making your outdoor space into a place you want to be 24/7

Reimagining your backyard can be a trick task, current garden trends are redefining outdoor living as a year-round experience and emphasising planet-friendly practices. Whether you have a cozy balcony or sprawling country garden, crafting a multifunctional haven that seamlessly blend sustainability with style is important to most. Currently, gardeners are incorporating native flora, drought-resistant plants, and pollinator-friendly species into their landscapes, fostering vibrant ecosystems that thrive throughout the seasons. Although this sounds like quite the task, even the smallest outdoor oasis can offer boundless possibilities for connection with nature and sustainable living. Outdoor living is evolving beyond mere summertime leisure, so lets explore some garden ideas for 2024.

2024 Garden Trends and Ideas for Spring

Eco-Friendly and Biodiverse Planting:

Whether you ask a garden designer or just your average “hobby gardener”, they will say that gardening trends are shifting to focus on eco-friendly changes that encourage local flora and fauna to thrive. Cottage style gardens with mixed flower beds, edible plants and medicinal plants are extremely popular due to trends in natural wellness and self-sufficiency. Even those with limited space can incorporate containers of garden herbs or potted fruits and veggies (tomatoes are a great choice for container cultivation!).

If you want to make your garden a beautiful, interesting place to be, encouraging more life, movement and variation is essential. Gardens that support local wildlife such as birds, insects, invertebrates as well as the animals that rely upon them are rising in popularity. For instance, if you have the space for a pond or flowering tree, these are fantastic for creating biodiversity. Berry-bearing shrubs and pollinator friendly plants are also great options if you can’t swing something quite so substantial. Moreover, spring pollinator plants such as lilac, crocuses and lilies of the valley are not only easy to get your hands on at any local garden centre, but fit into almost any style or type of garden.

If you really wish to lean into the wild and natural aesthetic, wildflowers such as bluebells, foxgloves, wild thyme and poppies add vibrant pops of colour to long patches of grass. Moreover, a less manicured lawn means less mowing! However, if you prefer a cleaner look, creating a wildflower border still promotes biodiversity whilst keeping your space sleek and simple.

Ways to Save Water:

A great way to promote biodiversity, encourage critters and create a peaceful atmosphere is installing a water feature into your outdoor space. Self-circulating water features keep your water bill low whilst providing a water source for birds and small mammals. Drought- resistant plants are also a trending gardening idea. Resilient plants such as succulents are not only eye-catching and unique but are also perfect for drought resistant bedding. If you’re looking for eco-conscious and water saving plants that can thrive in sand and gravel rich soil here are a few ideas:

  • Aloe
  • Aeonium
  • delosperma cooperi
  • Drosanthemum
  • Crassula
  • Lampranthus

Outdoor Living Year-Round:

Making the most of your home inside and out is particularly important in a day and age where housing costs an arm and a leg, especially if you are lucky enough to have a garden. Therefore, comfortable living and entertaining spaces that can be used year-round are going to be even more popular in 2024. All-weather quick-dry furniture can be costly, but quality seating is a good investment for an enjoyable outdoor experience. Additionally, incorporating outdoor kitchens into these entertaining spaces are rising in popularity, accompanied by weatherproof pergolas and fire pits for extra warmth.

If you’re looking to make your outdoor space more multi-functional, integrating “well-being zones” such as cold plunges and saunas may be for you. Cold water exposure is often used to improve your mood, immune system, reduce inflammation and muscle soreness. Heat therapy tools such as saunas are also great for aches and pains in your joints and muscles, as well as stress management, cardiovascular function and improving blood circulation. They don’t have to take up much space either! If you are looking for some at home self-care whilst saving space, try immersing your cold plunge or sauna within your planting areas. This will keep a cohesive look to your garden and create a peaceful surrounding whilst you relax.

Although the dark and gloomy months are nearing their end, why not brighten up your garden with some colour? The neutral aesthetic has been popular for a long time and although it is understated and elegant, colour is vastly undervalued in outdoor spaces. We are not advocating for a neon yellow accent wall by any means, but blues, peach tones, and purples will complement your plants and make your space pop. However, if you’re not into colourful walls, tiles, or furniture, try some colourful plants! Tulips can come in dozens of colours, Continus Coggygria are a royal purple tone, Zinnias are a stunning lime green and African daisies are not only multicoloured but drought resistant!

Making the Most of Smaller Spaces:

If your garden space is limited there are still plenty of options to maximise what you have. Visual interest can be added through the use of elevated decking, raised beds or hanging baskets. Also, standing plant pots and repurposed containers are great eco-conscious ways to give your balcony, patio or garden a facelift. If your outdoor area is partially or fully shaded, Azaleas and Camellias are fantastic flowers to brighten up your space. They can either be planted in containers, small gardens or even used to fill gaps in borders (note that they work well together as they both prefer acidic soil). Additionally, fire pits and water features are great space-saving ways to add a focal point to small areas. For instance, our Hemi 26 is the smallest fire bowl in our Hemi series, perfect for apartment living. If you don’t have access to your own garden, community gardens are also a rising trend for 2024. Shared spaces like this can provide community and a social space for those with a green thumb, giving you all the benefits of being outdoors without having to take care of an entire backyard by yourself!

In conclusion, the gardening landscape of 2024 is a testament to the evolving relationship between humans and nature. Garden designers are embracing sustainable practices and biodiverse planting techniques to create vibrant ecosystems that thrive year-round. Whether you’re transforming a sprawling country garden or maximising a cosy balcony, the emphasis on planet-friendly gardening is evident in the incorporation of native flora, drought-resistant plants, and pollinator-friendly species. The concept of outdoor living has evolved beyond mere leisure, with the integration of all-weather furnishings, outdoor kitchens, and wellness zones like cold plunges and saunas. Even in the smallest of outdoor spaces, innovative design and strategic use of vertical elements offer boundless opportunities for connection with nature and sustainable living.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Lava Stone or Fire Glass for a Gas Fire Pits

Factors to consider when choosing either fire glass or firestone for your fire pit

Depending on your aesthetic desires, the amount of heat distribution you’d like, maintenance levels and cost, you may prefer fire glass or lava stone for your fire pit. This blog post will explore these factors whilst highlighting the cautionary note that fire glass can trap propane , necessitating careful consideration when using it with propane fuel.

Factors to consider when choosing either fire glass or firestone for your fire pit

Aesthetics:

    • Fire Glass: Fire glass, also known as fire beads or fire crystals, is available in various colors and shapes, creating a modern and elegant appearance. It reflects and enhances flames, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a contemporary and decorative look. However, it’s crucial to exercise caution when using fire glass with propane fuel that propane is heavier than air. If one layers on too much glass you can effectively trap the propane should one have a leak as it sinks into the firepit and trap the propane, risking ignition.   Natural gas is lighter than air and as opposed to propane it does not sink.
    • Lava Stone: Lava stone provides a more rustic and natural look, available in earthy tones like black, brown, and red. While it may not offer the same variety of colors as fire glass, lava stone can complement outdoor and rustic settings well.

Heat Distribution:

    • Fire Glass: Fire glass does not absorb heat and efficiently and therefore does not reflect the heat produced by flames until the unit has been on for some time.. Once glass is heated up it tends to “hold” the heat for an extended period after the fire has been extinguished. This means you have to be wary of using fabric covers until you are assured that the firepit is cold to the touch to avoid burning your cover.
    • Lava Stone: Lava stone absorbs and retains heat, providing a gradual release over time. While contributing to a cozy atmosphere, it might not distribute heat as efficiently as fire glass and it will cool down faster than fireglass.

Factors to consider when choosing either fire glass or firestone for your fire pit

Maintenance:

    • Fire Glass: Fire glass is generally low-maintenance, producing no ash, soot, or debris. Cleaning is relatively easy, involving rinsing or wiping down. However, caution should be exercised when cleaning around propane connections.
    • Lava Stone: Lava stone may accumulate ash and debris over time, requiring regular cleaning to maintain its appearance. While it may demand more effort compared to fire glass, it’s essential to exercise caution with propane connections in both cases.

Cost:

    • Fire Glass: Fire glass is much more expensive than lava stone, with costs varying based on type, color, and brand. Despite the higher cost, many find the aesthetic benefits and low maintenance worthwhile.
    • Lava Stone: Lava stone is generally more budget-friendly than fire glass, making it a more economical choice.
    • In summary, the choice between fire glass and lava stone depends on personal preferences, budget, and the desired aesthetic. Exercise caution with fire glass and propane fuel, taking necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.

The Top 5 Considerations for Incorporating a Modern Gas Fire Pit Into Commercial Venues

Fire pits for commercial venues/locations

Outdoor spaces in commercial establishments are in high demand, prompting businesses such as hotels and restaurants to seek modern solutions for customer attraction,  warmth and aesthetics. Solus Decor, a leading provider of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) fire pits, offers an exquisite combination of durability and safety. This article explores the safety considerations and unique features our products can provide. For instance, glass wind guards, remote shut-off valves and ignition lock boxes or timers are important when incorporating Solus’ UHPC modern gas fire pits in commercial settings.

Resilient Construction with Ultra-High-Performance Concrete:

Solus Decor is renowned for its commitment to quality and durability, evident in our use of UHPC. This material not only provides exceptional strength but also ensures longevity in diverse weather conditions, making Solus fire pits a reliable choice for commercial venues seeking a long-lasting fire pit.

Glass Wind Guards for Enhanced Safety:

One of the standout features of Solus gas fire pits is the incorporation of glass wind guards. These shields serve as an aesthetically pleasing but protective barrier against gusts of wind, preventing flames from being extinguished unexpectedly. This additional safety measure is crucial in maintaining a consistent and secure flame, when an area is prone to open and exposed wind gusts like rooftop gardens or seaside outdoor patios.

Certifications and Compliance:

Solus Decor understands the importance of adhering to safety standards and local regulations. Our modern gas fire pits are designed with compliance in mind, ensuring that installations meet industry standards. Obtaining necessary certifications is a critical step to guarantee the safety of patrons and staff in commercial settings.

Automatic Ignition Systems and Flame Control Technology:

Solus gas fire pits feature advanced automatic ignition systems that enhance safety by shutting off the gas supply in case of unforeseen circumstances. Coupled with flame control technology, these systems allow precise adjustment of flame height, offering businesses the flexibility to create their desired ambiance, while maintaining control and safety. Personally, we recommend utilizing either a lock box or timer integrated as the ignition system. This level of control allows the commercial venue to direct the activities surrounding the fire pit.

Incorporating Stylish Glass Wind Guards:

The addition of glass wind guards not only serves a functional purpose but also contributes to the aesthetic appeal of Solus fire pits. The transparent shields allow patrons to enjoy the mesmerizing flames with an unobstructed view. This combination of style and safety adds a unique touch to the outdoor ambiance.

Regular Maintenance for Optimal Performance:

Scheduled maintenance checks are paramount to identify and address potential issues promptly. Regular inspections help businesses uphold the safety and functionality of Solus’ gas fire pits ensuring a consistent and secure outdoor experience for patrons. Solus is the original manufacturer of it’s burners and therefore parts and accessories are readily available should the need arise.

Solus Decor’s gas fire pits are crafted with ultra-high-performance concrete and complemented by stylish glass windshields, offering a sophisticated solution for commercial outdoor spaces. The incorporation of these safety features, along with a commitment to quality and compliance, allows businesses to create a warm and secure atmosphere. By embracing the durability of UHPC and the protective benefits of glass windshields, Solus elevates safety and style in outdoor settings. Consequently ensuring a memorable experience for patrons in hotels and restaurants.

Comparing Solus Fire Bowls and DIY Fire Bowls

Solus fire pits vs DIY fire pits

When comparing modern concrete fire bowls or fire tables purchased from a manufacturer (such as Solus Decor) with do-it-yourself (DIY) concrete fire bowls, there are several factors to consider. Both options have their own advantages and drawbacks, and the choice between them depends on a variety of factors. For example, personal preferences, skill level, and your desired outcome. Let’s explore the differences between Solus modern concrete fire bowls and DIY concrete fire bowls or fire tables.

Comparing manufactured fire pits and DIY fire pits

The advantages of Solus Decor’s Contemporary Concrete Fire Bowls and Fire tables

  1. Professional Craftsmanship:

Purchasing a modern concrete fire bowl or fire table from a reputable manufacturer ensures a high level of craftsmanship, durability and a proven track record.  However most importantly, it guarantees a fire pit that is certified and safe  (CSA, ANSI, CE or UKCA).  Solus bowls are professionally designed, cast, certified and assembled, providing a polished and aesthetically beautiful finish.

  1. Multiple sizes, shapes and burner configurations:

Solus offers a range of customisation options, allowing customers to choose from various sizes, shapes, colours and finishes. This provides flexibility to match the fire bowl or fire table with the overall design of the outdoor space and in some circumstances allows the fire bowl to be converted into a table top which adds additional functionality to the space.

  1. Quality Assurance:

Established manufacturers adhere to quality standards and use concrete suitable for outdoor weather.  For instance, our products are backed up by thousands of installations around the world over the past 25 years.  At Solus, we use UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) which is made to withstand climate – Canadian climate – arguably one of the toughest climates on the planet.  This results in a long-lasting fire bowl that withstands outdoor conditions whilst retaining its aesthetic appeal over time.

  1. Ease of Installation:

Concrete fire bowls from reputable manufacturers are designed for easy installation with guides and videos that are easily accessible.

  1.   Consistency in Design:

Choosing a manufactured concrete fire bowl ensures a consistent design and finish. This is crucial for those who want a cohesive look in their outdoor space.

Solus fire pits vs DIY fire pits

The advantages of DIY Concrete Fire Bowls:

  1. Cost Savings:

DIY concrete fire bowls can be more cost-effective compared to purchasing a pre-made one. This is  true if you already have the necessary skills,  tools, molds and materials.

  1. Customization Freedom:

DIY projects allow for creative freedom. You can design the bowl to your specifications, experimenting with shapes, sizes, and finishes without limitations imposed by pre-made options.

  1. Personal Satisfaction:

There’s a sense of accomplishment and personal satisfaction that comes with creating something with your own hands.

  1. Learning Experience:

DIY projects provide an opportunity to learn new skills. Working with concrete can be a valuable experience for those interested in hands-on craftsmanship.

Important Considerations for DIY Concrete Fire Bowls:

DIY concrete fire pit

  1. Skill Level:

DIY concrete projects require some level of skill and knowledge. Individuals without experience may need to invest time in learning the basics. It is not as easy as throwing sand, gravel and powder into a mixing barrel despite the you tube videos out there.

  1. Time and Effort:

Creating a DIY concrete fire bowl can be time-consuming. It requires careful planning, execution, and curing time for the concrete. All concrete is not created the same and more often than not home made or DIY concrete doesn’t last and often cracks.

  1. Materials and Tools:

Ensure that you have access to the necessary materials, tools, and safety equipment. This includes concrete mix, molds, reinforcing materials, and personal protective gear.

  1. Design Precision:

Achieving a precise and polished design requires a lot of skills not to mentioned a vibration platform to achieve a polished look.  Individuals should be prepared for some experimentation to get the desired result.

  1. Longevity:

The longevity of a DIY concrete fire bowl is circumstantial, and requires a deep understanding of concrete, as well as the level of craftsmanship. Attention to detail during the construction phase is crucial for durability.

Conclusion:

The choice between a pre-made Solus Decor modern concrete fire bowl or modern gas fire table and a DIY project depends on individual preferences, budget constraints, and the willingness to invest time and effort in the creation process. While manufactured options offer convenience, quality assurance, and customization within certain parameters, DIY projects provide the freedom to create a personalized piece. Ultimately, the decision comes down to the balance between convenience, customization, and the satisfaction derived from crafting your own outdoor feature.

With do-it-yourself (DIY) concrete fire bowls created at home, there are several factors to consider. Both options have their own advantages and disadvantages and the choice between them depends on factors such as personal preferences, skill level, and the desired outcome.

Getting Ready for Winter; How You can Prepare Your Solus Fire Pit In 12 Easy Steps

Getting Ready for Winter; Checklist for your Solus Fire Pit

Getting Ready For Winter; How You Can Prepare Your Solus Fire Pit in 12 Easy Steps.

When your Solus fire pit is not going to be used for months (although it can be enjoyed year round), or will be stored during winter, we recommend the following instructions.

Preparing your Solus gas outdoor fire pit for winter is essential to ensure its longevity and safe operation. By following these steps and the specific instructions provided by Solus or the retailer, you can ensure it remains safe and functional for years to come.

  • Step 1: Shut off the main gas supply and electrical switch (if equipped). Locate the shut-off valve and close it to prevent gas flow. This is to avoid accidental ignition. Remove leaves and stones inside the cage (if necessary).
  • Step 2: Remove all accessories like wood top and glass shield and store indoors. If your fire pit has removable components such as a glass wind guards, consider storing them indoors for the winter to prevent damage and to allow the cover to fit snugly.Clean and dry the components before storing them.

  • Step 3: Clean the exterior of the fire pit. Remove all debris, leaves and soot from the fire pit. Moisture, dirt, dust and other surface contaminants must be wiped and cleaned. Use warm water and soap.
  • Step 4: Clean the burner. Use a soft brush and avoid using abrasive materials that could damage the burner.
  • Step 5: Clean the Ignition (if equipped). For electronic ignition, use emery cloth or very fine sandpaper (above 400)  and gently buff the ignitor, the pilot assembly and the thermosensor only if they look discoloured or sooty. If they look clean, leave them alone. For manual ignition with a flame supervision device, if dirty, use the same method of emery cloth or very fine sandpaper.
  • Step 6: Check Pilot Assembly (if equipped). Check and remove any debris and soot inside the pilot cage and within the burner. Any debris can trap moisture during storage and can result in a clogged and blocked orifice. TIP: Using a compressed air duster or vaccum to clean the burner nozzles and pilot assembly really helps to blow any debris or water out and can avoid having to dissemble the pilot and significantly improve the strength of the pilot flame. These can be purchased online or in electronics stores.
  • Step 7: Inspect the firepit. Inspect the burner, gas lines, and ignition system for signs of wear, corrosion, or damage. Look for rust, cracks, or loose connections.  This requires you to remove the rocks (put them in a bucket) and pull the burner up via the burner manifold and inspect the connections underneath.  Ignition issues can often be a simple loose connection.  Make sure you put a blanket or some sort of fabric to protect the rim or the surface of the fire table.  The metal stand of the fire pit burner can scratch the surface so please be careful.
  • Step 8: Protect Gas Lines. If the gas lines are exposed, consider insulating them with pipe insulation to prevent freezing. Freezing temperatures can cause the gas lines or hoses  to contract and split and potentially lead to damage.

For any replacement parts, please visit our online store; www.thegasfirepits.com/product-category/replacement-parts/

Part replacement should be done by a professional technician or gas fitter.

  • Step 10: Cover your firepit with a Solus high-quality, weather-resistant cover. You must keep the burner dry. This is to protect your investment. If you have a table surface, the cover must be tented to ensure water does not pool on top of the firepit which will affect the surface negatively. Ensure the cover is securely fastened to protect the fire pit from snow, rain, and debris.  The all metal covers will also protect the firepit over the winter. If you no longer have your Solus cover or the all-weather cover is old and started to lose its’ shape (water can pool on top of the cover in winter). A replacement can be purchased from our online store.
All weather covers for your Solus Fire Pit

REMEMBER to test run. If you are going to use your fire pit this winter (and why not!)…DO THIS FIRST.

It is not uncommon for people to not use their fire pit for some months and then decide to throw a party. Or it is the first time using your fire pit in the Spring. If you are planning to run your fire pit, do a trial run before hand.

  • Step 11: “Purge” the gas line of air. If the fire pit is started after some time off, air can become trapped in the line or hose. In this case, the firepit needs to be purged.
  • Step 12: Perform a leak test – reverse and sequence plus. Before the first use, conduct a leak test to ensure there are no gas leaks. Use a soapy water solution to check all connections for bubbles, indicating a leak. If you find a leak, contact a professional for repairs. It is suggested you use compressed air on the burner jets prior to ignition.

And remember for electronic ignition to take off the cover!

In Conversation with Theron Horton Design

solus hemi fire pit

You will have seen fantastic photos of Theron Horton’s design work on our Instagram feed and no doubt dreamed of transforming your own garden into a fantasy space for outdoor entertaining.  We have taken a moment with Theron to discuss his inspiration, design process and how he has been dealing with these unprecedented times.

The love of the garden and design started from an early age with Theron. He took it upon himself to help out in the garden, mowing the lawn, raking the leaves and even pruning the roses seemingly with an inbuilt knowledge of what to do. Not content with the practical side of gardening he took his creative flair inside the family house; rearranging and organising the furniture whenever his Dad undertook any redecoration project to enhance the space.  It was clear from an early age that Theron had an innate talent for design and his love of the outdoors led him to creating beautiful outdoor spaces.

After attending UBC Continuing studies programme in Residential Garden Design in 2013 he has seen his design practice go from strength to strength.

The Design Process

The design process is customer -centric. I focus on the client to learn what the well-appointed and arranged Outdoor Living Space looks like for them.  It is essentially a process of guided self-discovery. I help the clients identify what they do not like first.  As part of that process, some desirable elements are identified and those preferences guide our navigation toward more choices for preferences related to the selection of exactly the right elements that comprise the uniquely customized and well-integrated Outdoor Living Space; low-profile glass door and wall systems, pergolas with automated, retractable louvre systems, outdoor kitchen space, pools, spas, sound systems, other recreational and practical components and materials selections for finishing all of those. All of which, of course, relates to the budget.  Everyone has one.  Some are bigger than others but communicating early and often budget implications related to preferred materials selections is vital to a successful Design and Project.

The Gibbons Project

You will no doubt have seen this sensational project on our Instagram feed with the fantastic outdoor spaces that works for every event, dining, relaxed outdoor seating and even a spa area! The family had an irregularly shaped space and felt that it was not being used to its full potential and most importantly it needed to work for the whole family. Theron Horton Design worked with the family to understand key priorities for their project and came up with a list to work with.

In the end my directives were to provide a plan, making best use of space, that would allow for a covered but open air spa with surrounding deck, an open flex space that might be used for lounging on one or two chaise longues or whatever else, a fireplace gathering space with chairs but also some flexibility for additional seating in the circle, a covered but open air dining space for a large table that could be expanded to be even larger and a covered but open air outdoor kitchen with BBQ, large beverage chiller, in-cabinet storage and a comfortable seating/bar area for guest to gather near the person grilling without getting in the way.”

Theron Horton Design provides fantastic visuals to help guide clients through the design process and help them visualise the space, which can so often be the hard part for clients at the start of the design process.

We love this space and the materials used, which complement our Hemi fire pit perfectly.

Dealing with Covid19

As with every business the impact of Covid 19 has been stressful and worrying at times, however Theron has managed to navigate through this. The nature of the work means that social distancing can be done, and works can continue with relatively little disruption.  Now more than ever our gardens have become a sanctuary and one of the places we can still enjoy seeing family and friends.   They truly need to be an extension of the home and work on many levels and this is something that Theron Horton achieves with his designs. Theron is currently working on a roof terrace design and a hugely exiting development is the opening of his showroom, a great development for the design practice. We can’t wait to see these next projects come to life!

The garden design for RHS Tatton Park entitled From Hop to Glass was sponsored by JW Lees brewery in celebration of  the 190th anniversary of the brewery . The design draws inspiration from the brewing industry, interpreting materials, features and processes in a contemporary style and composition.

The design is in part framed by glass screens, providing a foil for grasses, which are mixed with deep red and amber perennials to represent the inviting flow and texture of a freshly-poured pint.

Within the planting is a circular shallow stream, which encloses relaxing spaces to sit and relax combined with the familiar textures and elements that are synonymous with a traditional pub. The curved bench gives the feel of the serving bar and the warm and inviting atmosphere is provided by the Solus Decor fire pit and the brass details around the garden.

Solus Decor at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show

Solus Decor fire pit at RHS Hampton Court

Solus Decor have collaborated with the award winning garden designer Rosemary Coldstream at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show this month.  Rosemary’s Best of Both Worlds Garden won a gold award at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show.

The Best of Both Worlds Garden was designed for an imaginary couple who have a small garden but differing tastes. To keep each other happy, they’ve split the garden into two equal halves. One side has a country-garden feel and a palette of blues, purple and pinks.  The other side is more contemporary with a simpler mix of green foliage and golden grasses.

About the Best of Both Worlds Garden

Rosemary Coldstream has incorporated Solus Decor’s elevated halo fire pit in the contemporary side of the garden in a sunken seating area.  The planting in the contemporary area in a more simplified palette of yellow, green, blue and hints of red.  The landscaping is linear in its design in contrast to the country style garden.

The garden was created by landscaping apprentices, trainees and students on BALI’s GoLandscape initiative which is supported by the RHS.  BALI’S GoLandscape initiative encourages young people to pursue a career in horticulture. The young designers, landscapers and contractors have been mentored by designer Rosemary Coldstream and David Dodd of The Outdoor Room as part of the Best of Both Worlds Garden project.

Elevated Halo Fire Pit

Rosemary Coldstream has incorporated Solus Decor’s elevated halo fire pit with biofuel in the contemporary side of the best of both worlds garden. The elevated halo fire pit is available in 36″ and 48″ sizes and with three different fuel options; natural gas, liquid propane and biofuel as seen at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show.  The fire pit is ideal for both commercial and residential installations.

Memorial Garden at Trinity Western University

A scholarship and courtyard renovation honour the life of Jordan Thiessen.

A very special fire pit was installed at the Trinity Western University in British Columbia.

It is in memory of the life of Jordan Thiessen who was a student at the university. During his time at the university Jordan felt that the unloved and uncared for Douglas Courtyard could be a beautiful space. With some planting and a fire pit it would offer a place for students to relax and enjoy on campus.  Something he shared with his parents during a campus visit.

When Jordan sadly lost his life on October 18 2012, just 12 days after he married his university sweetheart, the family wanted to do something in his memory. His parents, Shirley and Carey set up the Jordan Thiessen Memorial Scholarship endowment but they wanted to do more. They recognised the deep impact that the University had on Jordan’s short life. They felt that making over the Douglas courtyard would not only honour Jordan, but it would also benefit all future students. Shirley threw herself into raising funds for both the scholarship and the courtyard project. The Jordan Thiessen Memorial Courtyard was dedicated September 14, 2013. On what would have been Jordan’s 24th birthday.

The memorial garden is now a wonderful place for students to enjoy, which gives great pleasure to Jordan’s parents.  If you would like to give to the courtyard project, or to the Jordan Thiessen Memorial Scholarship, please email Shirley Thiessen at shirley.thiessen@twu.ca.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018

We are looking forward to setting up the Solus stand and seeing everyone at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Last year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show was a great success on the Solus stand next to the main Pavilion.

We had a perfect view of all the comings and goings, the amazing show gardens, insight into the gardening trends and of course meeting all the lovely visitors!

The Solus stand at the 2017 RHS Chelsea Flower Show
The 2017 Solus stand, featuring our Dome and Scupper Water Features and Hemi and Elevated Halo Fire Pits

Setting up the stand is an important and time consuming part of the process. This year we are showcasing some fantastic screens by Screen with Envy as well as Silvadec flooring provided by Brooks Bros (UK) Ltd. But none of this is possible without Tarquin Ellington and his team at TKE Landscaping working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our stand is ready to go and looking its best for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

If you ever wondered what goes into building a stand for Chelsea, take a look at our short time-lapse film which captured our set up last year: Solus at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017

This year we are pleased to announce that our stand will be on Pavilion Way no. 608 and across from our friends Chilstone. We will be showcasing a new product; a metal drinks ring/table. This fits onto our Hemi fire bowl and creates a contemporary, multi-functional feature. We are also entering this into the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden Product of the Year. We have been finalists in this category in 2016 and 2017 and with any luck can make 2018 the third year in a row.

Making the most of a roof terrace

If you have a roof terrace or balcony, how can you make the most of it? There are some inspirational ideas out there to add value to your outside space.

Create warmth and use your outside space all year with a fire pit.

In a small space, it is still possible to add a functional but stylish fire pit that is safe to use. The Firecube is ideal and with different fuel options, it can conform to safety requirements. An optional table top also means it is multi-use.

For larger terraces or balconies, fire pits and tables will create a social area with seating positioned around. The Elevated Halo is a great example and used in residential and commercial spaces.

The Gwen Hotel, Chicago featuring a Solus Decor Elevated Halo fire table

Solus Dome water feature

Water features are also an option on a terrace and can create a calm and tranquil environment. They can be an oasis in the city and integral as part of the mindful living trend for 2018*. Look out for self-circulating and “plug and play” products. This means there is no plumbing and water is not being wasted. The Dome is a great example.

There are many designers who are experienced in designing roof top and terrace gardens which do tend to be in cities where outside space is at a premium.

Amber Freda Landscape Design have created some amazing spaces in NYC and their website has a portfolio of these as well as offering informative blogs such as flowers for a city roof top garden.

The Garden Builders in the UK have also worked on transforming roof spaces in London and their blog 7 roof terrace ideas showcases some of them and offers expert advice.
